Malakand division, which is part of the North West Frontier Province, covers one third of the total area of NWFP and includes remote areas like Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat, Buner, and Shangla districts of the Malakand division.
It is bounded by Afghanistan in the west, China in the extreme north, Northren Areas in the northeast, Batagram and Swabi districts in the southeast, Mardan district in the south, Malakand and Bajour agencies in the southwest. Swat, Panjkora, Chitral, and Ghurband are the main rivers that cater for the drainage of the tract. The most famous places of Malakand Division are Kalam, Madayan, Bahrain, Besham, Malam Jabba, Murghazar, Sharingal, and Kalash Valley etc. The main languages are Pashto, Kohistani, Gujro, and Chitrali etc (Map).
Under the Rural Telecom Programme, USF signed Contract of the pilot project on October 04, 2007 with Telenor that aims to provide services basic telephony and data services in Malakand Division. A subsidy of Rs. 310 Million is being provided to Telenor for this project.
